What makes us different?

One of the major differences of your program is the absence of ranks, belts or testing.  While these things can be useful they are not a tradtional aspect of Chinese Martial Arts training and have never been a part of the lineages that we study and train.

At Sequoia Kung Fu & Yoga we practice "peace-time" martial arts.  Our practice focuses on self development, and the protection of ourselves and loved ones.  We do not train for competitions, needless fighting, or to use aggression.

In our community cooperation is more important than competition, character is more important than skill, principles are more important than
aesthetics, and function is more important than form.  Join us and begin your training in Traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

Styles Taught at Sequoia Kung Fu

Each style at Sequoia Kung Fu is taught with integrity according to the traditions of the art.  We do not teach a fusion or blended style.  Each art allows us to develop and train our movement in different ways.  At first, you may be distracted by the differences in the styles, but overtime you will come to see the similarities and discover the principles which bind all styles of Kung Fu together.  Whether it is the fast trapping hands of mantis, the explosive power of Xing Yi, the “cotton & iron” feeling of Ba Gua or the dynamic takedowns of Shuai Jiao, it all comes from the same source.

It is important to remember that while we must stay true to the art and respect its traditions, it is just a tool.  A tool to train ourselves and someday make it our own.

Ba Gua Zhang is one of the most diverse systems of Kung Fu. There are quick explosive stets, slow and relaxed sequences, weapons, partner training, qi gong, body conditioning and more.  No other art is better at fully exploring and developing the movement capabilities of the body.  Ba Gua is a system that embraces change and individual expression creating and ever evolving practice to meet all the different needs of the practitioner.

Often thought of as a sister art to Tai Ji Quan and Ba Gua Zhang, the system of Xing Yi explores the relationships between intent, shapes, and movement.  From the outside, the movements of Xing Yi seem simple, but to develop a connected, deep understanding of the art takes a profound commitment.  Xing Yi best represents the idea of “training the simple until it becomes advanced”.

Shuai Jiao is the oldest form of Kung Fu in China and one of the oldest forms of wrestling in the world to be continuously trained and practiced.  Throughout its history it has always been used in a combative or competitive format, meaning that its techniques and training methods have been developed through real usage.  It is hard to even imagine the influence it is had on the development of Chinese Martial Arts except for the fact that is said that all forms of Kung Fu should contain throwing techniques.  Shuai Jiao as a system perfectly represents the essence of kung fu.

One of the most famous styles of Kung Fu, Praying Mantis is known for its quick footwork and hand combinations, but it also contains many takedowns, joint locks and kicks.  Most often referred to as an external system, Praying Mantis requires relaxed and smooth movement to be done correctly.

While most known for its health benefits, Tai Ji is also a very effect system of self defense when trained properly.  While Tai Ji Quan is not part of our  Level 1 & 2 Kung Fu Program curriculum students wishing to add this art to their practice are encouraged to explore the Tai Ji program offered by our school.
