About Yoga

A methodology rooted in Indian thought, yoga is a means to finding one's true self by maintaining a constant state of inner peace, compassion, and wisdom even in the midst of suffering. A physical and mental practice, yoga helps to bring balance and harmony within the body, mind, and emotions. Understanding how our body, mind, and actions are connected, we learn to move, think, feel, and act with more integrity and mindfulness. 

The asana practice of yoga uses the breath, postures, and breath coordinated with movement to build awareness, strength and flexibility, as well as address any imbalances in the body.  Just one of the many paths of yoga, asana practice builds energy and focus, as well as relaxation, restoring the body and the mind.    ​​

Benefits of Yoga

  • Builds awareness of the breath, the body, and the mind.
  • Relieves stress by clearing the mind and bringing one's focus more inward, exploring how breath, body,  and mind impact each other.
  • Improves flexibility with poses that gradually and safely open the body, relieving stiffness and tightness in the muscles.
  • Builds muscle strength while holding postures with proper alignment and learning to engage the body from the ground up.
  • Increases core strength while learning to engage not only the abdominal muscles, but the entire band of muscles around the hips and waist that protect the spine and maintain good alignment of the body.
  • Improves balance while learning to slowly move between postures, shift weight, and identify to correct any muscle imbalances in the body (e.g., right arm is stronger than the left arm, left hip is more open than the right hip, strong abdominal muscles but weak back muscles, etc.).
  • Improves overall posture while the practice addresses weak muscles, tight muscles, and awareness and engagement of the body.
  • Boosts blood circulation, heart rate, and physical and mental endurance.
  • Improves breathing and increases lung capacity (maximum intake of oxygen during exercise).
  • Relieves depression and increases energy and happiness.
  • Helps fight food cravings.
  • Relaxes the system.
